What is Matroska?

As mentionned in my previous post, i got a movie on as a .mkv file. This is the extension for Matroska, and extensible open standard Audio/Video container. These are found as .mkv files (for video) and .mka files (for audio). Let's c what it is, this comes from the website itself..and i think its pretty clear :

First, it is essential to clarify exactly "What an Audio/Video container is", to avoid any misunderstandings:

  • It is NOT a video or audio compression format (video codec)
  • It is an envelope for which there can be many audio, video and subtitles streams, allowing the user to store a complete movie or CD in a single file.

This container has been designed keeping in mind future issues, and thus can be considered as a modern container format..the following are the features of the container :

  • Fast seeking in the file
  • High error recovery
  • Chapter entries
  • Selectable subtitle streams
  • Selectable audio streams
  • Modularly Extendable
  • Streamable over internet (HTTP and RTP audio video streams)
  • Menus (like DVDs have)

If u're thinking what kind of player plays this format..then its definitely not ur windows media player..bt it u already are acquainted with the fabulous VLC media player, rest assured, vlc recognises this format by default. Anyways there are loads of free players that support it. And from my experience..i really enjoyed the movie. No problems at all.
